Brief history of the pub by the landlord, J Litchfield, (Posted, 17 March 2005).
The Halfway House has been a pub for at least 200 years. Parts of the building are older but most of it would date from the late 18th century.
The names of all of the licensees since 1841 (the first reliable census) are known to us and most were in residence for a long period of time. The famous Minnie Sandford was here from 1917 until 1962.
In the late 19th century the pub was kept by 2 sisters of the local Walrond family following the death in harness of their father. The Litchfield family arrived on August the 19th 1992 and if they don't watch out they will surpass Minnie's stay.
For much of the 20th century the Halfway House belonged to the Hambridge brewery, owned by Mr Lang of Curry Rivel, a farmer and landowner whose decedents frequent the pub today.
It was always listed in the records as a Beer House (B.H. on the large scale O.S. maps). A Beer House was above a Cider House in class but wasn't so grand as to be allowed to sell spirits or wines.
In 1962 the pub was sold to Georges brewery of Bristol and the tattered lamp above the front door dates from that year. In 1964 Georges brewery was swallowed up by the larger Courage brewery who eventually sold the pub on in 1984 - otherwise today it would be part of the Scottish Newcastle chain.
